  • Cotton Tampons Safer for Toxic Shock Syndrome

Dr. Philip Tierno's research which was published by the Journal of Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynocology, clearly showed that cotton tampons did not produce the TSS toxin from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and concluded that they "lower the risk for tampon-associated TSS."

Despite these findings, the industry did not do any more major research on the topic. On the contrary, big Tampon brands, such as Tampax, decided to do their own funded research and refute Dr. Tierno's findings.

Interestingly, the first commercial tampon was made of cotton, modeling after the cotton plugs used in surgery at the time. Now, big tampon brands use 100 percent elemental chlorine-free bleached rayon with a polyethylene/polyester cover, but they still try to make it look like cotton.

The FDA relies on tampon safety data that is provided by the feminine hygiene products manufacturers, which is obviously not the most transparent or ethical way for any reliable research. The FDA does not require tampon makers to disclose their ingredients.

At The Selene, all our brands use only organic cotton for the tampons they manufacture. On top of it, they are cruelty free and biodegradable. Even if you do not buy from us, please choose wisely. Toxic Shock Syndrome is extremely dangerous and could be deadly.
